Sorry, I’m Not Sorry

I had to pause and think about whether or not to post this. I’m glad I did but, in the end, I reminded myself that this is my soapbox. This is my journal where I document my thoughts and feelings to reflect back on.

I know the struggle with sobriety is not easy to understand for people who don’t suffer from addiction. The concept doesn’t make sense to “normies”, just like the way they think doesn’t make sense to anyone suffering from addiction. I think of it as an empty space in their minds, whereas that space in my mind is filled with thoughts of how, when, and where I can get my next drink. I talked to my brother on my way home from a meeting and told him that some of the women had been sober since we were small children, and his immediate question was “They still go to meetings?”. I had to explain that we suffer from an incurable disease. Sobriety requires consistent maintenance. My sponsor says 3 weekly meetings to maintain, and 4 to grow.

I’m not sorry about maintaining my sobriety, the time and effort it takes. I know that I am supported and loved, but I constantly hear jokes about how busy I am, that I don’t have time for anyone, if I can ‘fit’ someone or something in my schedule, etc. Please don’t stop joking about this with me, I appreciate the reminder! But I’m not sorry.

Now fuck off because I don’t have time! 😉
