Dealing With Difficult People

When I started in management, these types of seminars were very popular, and I attended quite a lot of them. Being straightforward, blunt, and matter-of-fact in management is not recommended; I’m great at all of these!

I wish I had learned the tools and skills I am learning now in recovery when I started in management. I need to be more patient and empathetic with people, especially co-workers, and definitely with people I manage. I can’t change people or control them. Difficult people are everywhere. I have to be open-minded and see the big picture. I have to choose my reactions and responses to their actions carefully. How I react and respond allows me to set the tone and direction for the rest of the interaction, however long or brief it may be. I can lead it to be either productive or World War III.

So if anyone else has spent lots of time and money on these seminars, I think I’ve summed it up in less than half a page. All I had to do was become an alcoholic for 20+ years and then start the recovery process. You’re welcome. 🙂
