Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers I have the privilege of knowing. I am very lucky to have my mother, a step-mom, and two ex-mother-in-laws with whom I still have relationships. Both of my grandmothers have passed, but I have loving memories of them both throughout my childhood and into early adulthood. My paternal grandmother passed the month my daughter was conceived. Kendall has always been an old soul. If reincarnation is real, she is Doris Lee Marquis. My maternal grandmother lived in California, and Kendall was able to spend enough time with her to fully understand where all the women on my mother’s side of the family get most of their traits from. The Panamanian genes are strong!
Being a mother is the greatest gift I’ve ever been given. Having an independent, strong-willed, beautiful, and passionate daughter can be maddening, but I wouldn’t trade my worst day as a mom for my best day before I was a mom. It’s the same with my sobriety. I wouldn’t trade my worst sober day for my best drunk day. I may be a slow learner, but I’ve finally come around to realize the best of the best is being a sober mom. Even if she calls me Cisco.
