Memorial Day Weekend

What an awesome day! It was a team effort. My roommate and I started on yard work at 8 am until a friend came over around 10:30 am to trim the trees in my secret garden. After a few hours, the transformation was incredible. We cleared paths, the driveway overgrowth cut back, lower limbs on the two biggest trees and lots of the smaller ones cut, and a good-sized pile of firewood for the bonfire.

After the work was done, sitting and visiting with two of my favorite people, we admired the work we’d accomplished and how nice it looked. I asked them the two questions on all of our minds. “How long into the work would you have started drinking?” And “How far would they have gotten before coming up with excuses or justifications to stop working and just continue drinking?” It’s my answers to these questions that are the little treasures and reminders that keep me going. Reminders that my life had become unmanageable, how much I despised and disgusted myself when I was drinking, and why I fight every damn day for my sobriety and recovery.
