Friday Night Lights Service

I never would have thought my favorite place to be on a Friday night would be a rehab facility alumni meeting. But here I am, loving my service position on the committee and nowhere else I’d rather be.

I’m sad that my six-month commitment as a greeter will be over at the end of June. Cat could tell I was pouting and let me talk it out. She reminded me that the purpose is service. Most of the people who attend the alumni meetings have recently completed their 28 days of inpatient treatment and are at a very vulnerable transition phase in their lives. They’re finding meetings and support in the big, wide world outside the safety of these secure walls, and it’s a safe haven to come back to for a meeting. The current residents who will soon face the same things and wonder how they will cope are also in attendance. I lovingly call them inmates, and I can because I was one. Knowing the person who wants to be the new greeter will support their recovery, as well as everyone else who walks in the front door, makes me happy. The position helped me in my recovery by giving me a purpose. It also allowed me to meet the older alumni who show up to support the newer alumni.

I’m not going anywhere, though. My new service position starting in July will be as one of the chairs at what I call Friday Night Lights. I’m nervous and excited to continue my purpose with the alumni committee.
