I love to smile and see other people smile. The only thing better is making people smile. My favorite service position is Greeter because I get to be the first person to see everyone coming in the door. I get to ask them how they’re doing and how their week has been, and my empathetic side can see it written on their faces when they need a compliment, a hug, or just a friendly smile and reassuring look that they’re in the right place. If you think you need a meeting or you think you don’t need a meeting, go to a meeting. We alcoholics can’t afford to become complacent or rest on our laurels.

This morning, I wore black leggings, purple socks pulled high over them, and a grey sweatshirt that said “NOPE, not today”. One of the women laughed when she was coming in and read it. I told her my sweatshirt summed up my motivation for getting ready this morning. She laughed more, told me I was cute, and said sometimes her inner child picks out her outfits too. I thought that was a great way of putting it.

Our meeting was emotional. There were tears of sadness and tears of happiness. There was also a lot of inspiration, one of the women received her 16-year chip. What an accomplishment! It was a reminder that dedication and determination to recovery and self-improvement pay off. One woman said the days are long, but the years fly by. I love that saying too!

I am inspired and motivated to continue learning and growing in my recovery, with these wonderful women by my side. And I’m happy that I get to try my best to make them smile one meeting at a time.
