Drinking alcohol had become a habit for nearly 30 years.
I’ve read it only takes 21 days to break a habit. I, and so many other alcoholics, are living, breathing proof that is complete bullshit.
Curious, I used my Ph.D. from Google and took a deeper dive into some research—not just about addiction habits, but habits in general. 18 to 254 days sounds much more realistic. That also explains why so many still-suffering alcoholics relapse again and again within the first nine months.
For me, it took a lot more than 21 days. It took desperation, honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness. Because of those things, I have made it 240 days without alcohol.
Today, I no longer feel the urge to reach for it, and I continue to thank my Higher Power for that gift every single morning.
