Moments of Connection

There was such a great turnout for the meeting tonight. It was rejuvenating to see so many new faces—not even newcomers, just people who don’t usually attend this meeting showing up. I love the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions because it gives such deep additional insight into the Big Book.

Several people shared that they don’t typically read from this book, and the message really hit home for them. We read Step Eleven: “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.”

I could have highlighted the entire chapter, but the part that resonated with me most was: “He thought it better to give comfort than to receive it, better to understand than to be understood, better to forgive than to be forgiven.”

It reminded me how often I used to pray for specific things—or for what I thought others needed—when really, I need to turn my will over to my Higher Power. I don’t know what’s best for others, and most of the time, I sure as hell don’t know what’s best for myself.

The conversation about how many of us had turned our backs on our Higher Power—because we didn’t receive what we prayed for or thought we were too far gone for redemption or help—was a reminder that I’m not alone in these feelings.

After the meeting, I talked with a friend who also reads Twenty-Four Hours a Day. It’s been a game changer for both of us, and I really appreciate his love for it. The short prayer is always grounding, and it never fails that when the Thought for the Day doesn’t resonate, the Meditation for the Day does.
