My Daughter called while I was running errands and wanted to come over to hang out with me. She had a rough week and needed someone to talk to. As a mom, I want to take all of her pain away. I wish I could make it mine, but that is not how life works. I am sober and present, so I get to be her sounding board. I get to offer her small pieces of advice. I get to listen and empathize with her. It’s wonderful that she chose me to listen and comfort her. Not too long ago she would not have chosen me.
While she was here, she opened her mail, and there was a letter from her school congratulating her on making the Fall 2024 Dean’s List! I am unbelievably proud of her, and the glow it brought to her face was priceless. She needed to know her hard work had paid off. She made this accomplishment while working full-time, going to school full-time, and living on her own for the first time in her life, not to mention taking care of the horses full-time.
My Daughter is the most resilient person I know. Her strength, courage, motivation, dedication, and determination drive me to be the best version of myself. I had to get sober for me, God knows I tried and failed repeatedly for others. I’m staying sober for myself and for her.
