After the week we’ve had, Kendall and I decided some retail therapy was in order. Nothing crazy—no online horse bidding—just a few new outfits, some errands, and an excuse to get out of the house and give our hearts and minds a break from the heaviness of grief.
It ended up being more than just shopping. It was laughter in the car, sharing little stories as we walked store aisles, and the comfort of simply being together. Those everyday moments matter so much more to me now than they ever did before.
It’s still strange adjusting to life with her out on her own. For over a year now she hasn’t lived at home, and while I’m proud of her independence, there are times the quiet in the house feels too loud. I miss the rhythm of seeing her every day. But I also know this distance is healthy—for her growth, for mine—and it makes the times we do share all the more meaningful.
Watching her make her way in life reminds me of how far I’ve come too. I don’t take our time together for granted. Every coffee run, every laugh, every errand—these are living amends I get to make with her. A chance to show up differently than I did before. A chance to be present, patient, and grateful.
I’m learning that grief and gratitude can coexist, and that even in hard weeks, love has a way of shining through in the smallest of moments. And for that, I am deeply thankful. My heart is full.
