Steps With a “1” in Them

I read Drop the Rock when I was a few months sober, before I had completed the Twelve Steps. It was a great book, but there was so much I didn’t understand at the time. Book Club with the ladies was great last night, and I’m really excited that we chose The Ripple Effect for our next read. It reminded me that I’ve been wanting to go back and read Drop the Rock again, and this feels like the perfect opportunity to read both. Both books break down and explore Step 6 and Step 10 in more depth, with stories that share experience, strength, and hope—similar to the Big Book.

My sponsor shared something tonight that really stuck with me — she said she was told that any Step with a “1” in it can be practiced every day, no matter where we are in the program. I love that. Step 1 keeps me grounded in humility and reminds me where I came from. Step 10 helps me stay accountable and clear the wreckage as it comes. Step 11 keeps me connected spiritually, and Step 12 reminds me to be of service and to live with gratitude. It’s such a simple but powerful way to remember that recovery is a daily practice, not just a process we complete once.
