When I started attending AA meetings, I was overwhelmed by what seemed to be a different language. I quickly learned the basics and common acronyms. I also quickly conceded it would take a lifetime to hear and understand all of them. I love the catchy phrases and sayings that provide a quick pick-me-up and sense of comfort.
For most of my life, I’ve felt like I’m searching for something, but I do not know what it is. I know now that it is my disease playing tricks on my mind. No matter how far and long I search, I will never find it. “I came to AA for drinking, I stayed for thinking”, reminds me that even in sobriety, I need to put in hard work daily for my emotional health.
